28mm Stone Bridge

This is a 28mm stone bridge that I recently 3D printed and painted up. I have a larger Warlord Games Stone Bridge that I use often, but sometimes I need two, or I want one with a smaller footprint. This one I printed just large enough to fit a Panther tank in 28mm and no more. I started with a base color of British WWII Uniform primer from a can leftover from my very large British WWII army. From there I picked out some extra colors, dry-brushed, and then added some washes to represent recent muddy wheels passing over. The latter matches up well to my homemade muddy roads.

This was liquid resin one morning and a fully painted terrain piece that evening. Sometimes I really love having a resin 3D printer available for when a need arises.

Two 28mm Burned Out Farmhouses

Back in 2020 I painted up these resin ruined farmhouse sections.  I've been enjoying using them in games as their footprint and styling are both to my liking. Unfortunately the bare pieces on the tabletop didn't really convey the 'ruined building' vibe. Also the actual footprint of the terrain piece was difficult to define during a game. Move forward four+ years and I've finally based these up and added some additional features made from foam and other terrain materials. Now they're much more functional while preserving all of the qualities that I liked from the original resin pieces.

The larger piece, suitable for the 'main farmhouse' includes the larger of the two corner pieces. At the recommendation of my uncle, I also added some wisps of smoke to convey that 'freshly burned' feel.

The smaller of the two pieces, with a 28mm British infantry NCO for scale. This could either be a smaller farmhouse or barn building. The corner with the white smoke was scratch built from foam and balsa to round out the building area.

One of the nice things about these pieces as they're quite generic and can be used for many historical periods.

Two 15mm Built-Up-Areas for Napoleonic through WWII Gaming

I made up these two 15mm BUAs primarily for use with the 'O' Group WWII rules. They can as easily be used for any 15mm gaming from Napoleonics through WWII.

The farmhouse and stable were resin pieces pulled from my 'dead lead' box. I believe I purchased these about 20 years ago. The walls I 3D printed. All pieces were painted and glued to a custom laser-cut base. A trough and wagon were added. I think the trough was from Musket Miniatures and the wagon might be Essex.

The small house and outhouse may look familiar to regular readers of this blog. This is a reduced scale of the "Small Italian Farmhouse" that I printed and painted in 28mm scale a few posts back. The outhouse was a free STL file and the walls come from the same STL pack that the house comes from. Coincidentally, these are the same walls that I used above in the farm complex.

Both pieces are designed to have some open space to accommodate a few stands of 15mm figures. Here's an 'action shot' of the farmhouse being garrisoned by some US infantry.

I'm counting these as two 'terrain/misc' in my annual painting totals.

3D Printed 28mm Small Italian Farmhouse

Quick 3D print and paint of this small Italian house. I intend to use it as a small farmhouse. I purchased the STL files for this as part of a larger set and I'm very happy with the purchase. More from this set to come.

One terrain/misc added to the annual painting totals.

28mm Minefields for Chain of Command

These are three 6"x6" minefields for use primarily with Chain of Command, which prescribes minefields of this size. They can also be used for other 28mm WWII games as well. While mines might not typically be visible, I find this representation to be quite recognizable by the players on the tabletop. The mines are 3D printed. Two of the bases are turfed MDF bases and a third, on thin clear acrylic for placing minefields across roads, or in urban areas.

These are minimally populated with terrain decoration to allow infantry figures to be placed on them. This would be appropriate should the mines represent anti-armor mines, or for engineering teams during the mine clearing process.

Still to come, barbed wire emplacements and road blocks also sized appropriately for Chain of Command.

28mm Ruined European Church

I purchased this ruined church model over 15 years ago during a trip to Historicon. I believe it's a Hovels brand model. It didn't come with a base, so the rubble surrounding it and the base I added. This is a useful piece as it's simple, nicely sized and has sufficient area inside to house a decent number of figures, including room for a sniper up in the steeple.

Not much more to say about it. I'll count this as one 'Terrain/Misc' in the annual painting totals.

Two 28mm Ruined Brick Buildings

Two more ruined buildings and an extra wall section. These are more of my continued effort to reduce my un-built, un-painted scenery stash. These were primed off-white, wet-ish dry-brushed the brick walls to get the bricks red and keep the mortar white. The stucco and plaster sections were painted, then I went at them with a special 'brick mix' I made using rust and 'European Dust' pigments from Mig. These were followed with some random applications of 'Smoke' and 'Dark Mud' Mig pigments. I'll count these as two 'Terrain/Misc' in this year's painting totals.

28mm Ruined Building

This is a 28mm ruined building I built from resin wall pieces I bought around 20 years ago at Historicon. Recently I decided it was time to start working on chipping away at my un-built terrain pile. I had always thought I'd do a ruined city game, possibly Berlin or similar. This piece is suitably generic enough that I think it's timeless. That said I'm most likely to use it in WWII skirmish games.

Recent events in Ukraine have unfortunately given me the opportunity to see far too many destroyed buildings. The one thing that has struck me is how monochrome these scenes are, with the exception of burnt areas. I expect that's from the thick layer of dust that the collapsing buildings creates. I've attempted to recreate this with weathering effects and powdered pigments. The last of which were the black smoke/burnt pigments. Ideally I'd like to have more rubble in and around the walls, but this would make it a much less effective gaming piece, so I opted for a more cleared ruin.

28mm Round Sand Bag Emplacement

This was a quick, simple project. I've had this resin sand bag emplacement in my 'terrain to paint' box for maybe a decade. Recently I've decided to start actually working on this backlog and this piece floated to the top. Manufacturer is unknown. I primed it white and painted it with contrast and speed paints. Finishing touches with Mig streak and grime, Mig rust streak (on the corrugated metal and barrels) and a light dusting of Mid 'Europe Dust' dry pigments.

This is sized nicely to fit a good portion of my man-packed weapons teams as shown below. Due to the modern materials and 55-gallon fuel drums, it's only really usable for World War II and later. This will count as one (1) terrain piece for my annual painting totals. Expect to see more terrain sprinkled throughout my blog posts for the foreseeable future.

Gale Force 9 Rocky Hill Collection

This is my collection of Gale Force 9 rocky hills from their 'Battlefield in a Box Essentials' range. Left to right this includes their 'Large Rocky Hill', 'Extra Large Rocky Hill' and 'Rocky Hill - 2 Pieces' sets. The latter I've had for almost a decade. For the lazy these come out of the box ready to use on the tabletop with a decent dry-brushed paint job. The kits come supplied with a small amount of flock for you to add. I used the two 'Rocky Hill - 2 Pieces' hills for nearly a decade without flocking them. Eventually I added some additional dry-brushing of my own to break up the monochrome palette and flocked them with my preferred ground covering - Scenic Express Farm Pasture Blend

After flocking the smaller pieces I realized how much I use them and decided I wanted the full set, so I ordered both other pieces off of Ebay. Unfortunately when they arrived, there was significant damage to both. The worst was the 'Large Rocky Hill' which lost several large pieces of the resin. Interesting this exposed the filler foam inside giving a glimpse as to how they're constructed. Rather than returning them I used some epoxy to back fill the area and pieced all of the larger pieces in like a jigsaw puzzle. I filled the voids with fine sand and waited for things to set up.

After the repair I re-painted and used flock and grass tufts to strategically hide the small spots that were obviously repaired. Now that it's flocked and I've added my additional dry brushing, you can't even tell where it was broken. I'm hoping the epoxy back fill will provide a durable repair. I'm fairly rough on these pieces, and they will be handled often and figures will be placed on them, sometimes multi-figure stands.

The 'Extra Large Rocky Hill' had a fairly large four-inch crack all the way through the resin. It was still in tact, so I opted for a thin CA glue fill to re-bond the broken area. The repair was nearly invisible after drying, but I did opt to flock this area just for additional visual appeal. Dry brush, flocking and grass tufts were applied as I did for the other hills.
Again the repair is invisible. Hopefully the CA will hold through the pieces lifespan. If I have trouble with it re-breaking I'll go with the epoxy solution for this one as well.

This was a quick and easy repair and 'pimp up' of some excellent out of the box terrain.

Battlefield Debris by Warlord Games

Here are some of the pieces from Warlord Games 'Battlefield Debris' set that I've recently painted up. This is a fantastic set of miscellaneous detritus to scatter among your battlefields. The items shown in the photo to the left are what I've painted to date from this set. The paints used are a combination of Army Painter SpeedPaint, Citadel Contrast paint and traditional acrylics and washes. There's really nothing 'useless' in this box, and eventually I hope to paint it all up. It's all sized appropriately for Warlord Games Bolt Action line, but is also mostly usable for earlier periods with a few exceptions (oil drums, motorcycle, telephone pole).

These items, the sofa, chair, table barricade, oil drums, motorcycle and the fantastically sculpted wicker chair barricade were painted a while ago, but never photographed and included in the blog, although they did make an appearance in a couple game reports for 1-48 tactic games I ran last year.
Reverse view of the sand bag emplacements, barricade of crates and the stone building fragment. The barricade of crates could also easily double as an objective for a scenario as a 'supply dump' with or without the oil drums shown above.
Group shot of the items painted this week. The wooden furniture is particularly fun. I might actually put a piece or two of that permanently inside one of my ruined buildings. I like that there are still dishes on the shelves. That's a nice detail, but also makes that piece not suitable for 'in the street' placement. I'm sure if that cupboard was moved to the street, the dishes would remain in pieces on the floor of whatever room it was removed from.

There are four all-brick ruined pieces, which could be put in a base as a single ruined building. I'm still deciding if I'll do that or keep the flexibility of having them individually mounted. There are also two other pieces with brick coated with plaster that obviously go together.

The only regret I have about this set is that it doesn't include the ubiquitous stand-up piano you invariably see in nearly every WWII film with an urban theme. I still need to find one of those for my tabletop.  Maybe I can get a friend with a resin printer to print one up for me?

I'll be counting these as 20 'terrain/misc' pieces painted this year in my annual totals.

28mm Destroyed Cottage Terrain Pieces

These are six pieces of resin terrain that I've had for about 20 years. I'm not entirely sure of the manufacturer. They'll make a good set of 'ruins' terrain for Saga, but they can also be used for any period from the dark ages through WWII.

I've given these some age with some green algae growth on the bottom of the walls. I was going for a 'burned down years ago' look. Some of the walls can be put together into larger corner pieces in multiple different configurations.

My favorite piece in this set is the fireplace piece. I think of it as the 'scene of the crime'.

This will count as 6 'terrain/misc' created in the annual totals.

28mm Macedonian Generals

The past few of my Twitch.tv streams I have been working on these 28mm Macedonian general figures. They're from the Warlord Games SPQR range and are the Macedonian Heroes pack.

The personalities include Alexander himself on his horse with the leopard skin horse blanket he's always pictured with. This was my first attempt at leopard skin. I like the effect, but future attempts will include more spots.  I'm counting these as six figures in my painting totals due to the horses (as I usually do for cavalry)

I also worked on a test piece for what will eventually be six 'ruined cottage' terrain pieces. These are some very old, manufacturer unknown resin pieces I bought most likely about 20 years ago. They'll be useful for Saga as 'ruins' or any period medieval to WWII as ruined buildings. I will be finishing the other 5 pieces of the set on a future stream.

28mm Ruin for Saga, Generic Barricades

This is a 28mm 'ruin' that I've scratch built to use in Saga games. The two larger pieces are 'Ruins B' and 'Ruins D' pieces from Renedra Ltd. The rest of the pieces are scratch built from hand-cut foam blocks, loose stone and sand. The entire piece is also over-sprayed with sand-texture paint to make it look a lot less 'plastic'.

The two larger walls are magnetized. They can easily be removed for transportation, or to accommodate figures during play. The entire piece is just over the minimum size for a ruin as prescribed by the Saga rule set.

These are the Battlefield in a Box Wartorn Village Barricades from Gale Force Nine. These come pre-painted, and to be honest, can be easily used as-is out of the box. I took a little bit of time to re-dress some of the pieces. These come factory painted in four basic colors with a white dry-brush over nearly the entire piece. I over-brushed this white dry brush on all of the wood pieces using varied colors. I also re-painted the fence piece and put a wash over all the stone pieces to tone down the over-done white dry brush. Easy job, to turn a piece that was a solid 7/10 to 9/10. I didn't have good barricades in my collection and these easily work from dark ages all the way through WWII. Since this was only a touch-up job, I'm counting these four pieces as one 'terrain/misc.' in my annual totals.
